1948 Oldsmobile Dynamic 78

1948 Oldsmobile Dynamic 78 Fastback Sedan

Wonderful example of that classic post-war look, with a big car comes big style!  If you have ever wondered how it would feel to cruise down the road in a "lazy-boy recliner," this oldsmobile is the answer!   The dynamic 78 was the top of the line model for 1948 Oldsmobile.  The body of this highly contoured sedan wears a coat of dark red basecoat / clearcoat paint.  Clearcoat provides superior UV light protection over sub-par enamels and old laquers meaning it will not fade or dull quickly.  Stainless and chrome trim is tactfully placed to both enhance the appearance and offer some paint protection on the rear fenders.  A very distinctive 4 bar grille sets this car apart from similarly shaped 1948 GM models, showing very minor wear.  The side trim appears to have been rechromed in the not too distant past.  Front and rear bumpers are both driver quality.  A full set of wide white bias ply tires tastefully adds to the exterior style.  125" Wheelbase.  Personally I would advise the new owner to install a windshield visor to complete the look.

The interior is combination of grey and tan colors with body color portions where applicable.  Front and rear seats have been recovered with a cloth material.  Matching dark grey re-upholstered door panels.  I cant state enough how exceptional the dash is in this car.  It is one of the last examples of that classic "art-deco" style.  The phrase "pleasing to look at" is an understatement.  Check out the symmetry between the perfectly preserved gauge cluster and the glove box door which doubles as a matching glass faced clock.  Original tube type AM radio is still in its proper center dash location.  The single speaker grille in the middle takes up the lions share of the center dash, shrinking and sweeping outwards tying the entire piece together.  The craftsmanship and design just goes to show that the people at Oldsmobile took great pride in their work.  Steering wheel is in excellent shape showing gentle aging, two small chips are present where a suicide knob was mounted.  A period Correct Signal-Stat turn signals w/ 4 way flasher has been recently added for safety.  New grey carpet completes the interior.  8 fully functional side windows.  Optional underdash heater.  There is even enough interior room for a 6'11'' tall man to sit comfortably in the back seat!

The straight 8 cyl engine runs like a clock.  It is quiet and has a very smooth acceleration.  Burns no oil and does not smoke.  New copper oil pressure line, mechanical gauge is functional.  Temp gauge stays in operation range while driving over extended period of time.  6 volt electrical system has been recently serviced, charging gauge is functional.  New speedometer cable, however there is a problem with the drive gear on the transmission side that actually turns the cable, so at this time the speedo is inoperable.  Fully functional cowl vent does not leak.  19 gal fuel tank, vehicle gets approx 12 mpg, fuel gauge is functional and accurate.  Manual drum brakes stop as they should.  Hydromatic automatic transmission shifts excellent.  Frame and undercarriage is in good condition including all parts of the X-Frame.  Manual steering operates as it should with no excess play.  All the exterior lights work as they should.

It is very enjoyable to drive.
